About the Pledge of Allegiance
A Brief History
The Pledge of Allegiance was was originally composed by Colonel George Bach in 1887. Bach’s pledge ran as follows:
“We give our heads and hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag!”
In 1892, the pledge was revised by Francis Bellamy into the following:
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Then in 1923, Bellamy’s Pledge was updated to include the words “United States of America”:
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
The Pledge was formally adopted by Congress as the pledge in 1942, and the official name of the Pledge of Allegiance was adopted in 1945.
The phrase “under God” was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance on June 14, 1954, resulting in the version still used today:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
