Velociraptor Coloring Page

Print a velociraptor coloring page, and color the ferocious velociraptor, as seen in the Jurassic Park movies. This coloring page PDF includes two versions of the velociraptor.

On the first page you’ll find the classic reptile like raptor, similar to the ones in the films.

On the second page you’ll see a more modern, feather-covered raptor. Yep, scientists now believe raptors had feathers. Which makes them a bit less like terrifying dragons, and more like over-sized turkeys. Alas. This won’t be the first time science has taken the grandeur out of the world.

Velociraptor Fun Facts

The term velociraptor means “swift seizer” in latin. Velociraptors were approximately the size of a turkey. (The velociraptors in Jurassic Park more closely resembled dinosaurs of the genus Deinonychus.) There is no evidence that velociraptors hunted in packs. Velociraptor fossils have been discovered in Mongolia and China.

Adult velociraptors measured about 2 meters long and weight approximately 15 kg. In 2007 a velociraptor fossil was discovered in Mongolia with quill knobs in tact, proving that velociraptors had feathers. Since more primitive ancestors of the velociraptor also had feathered wings, it is likely that velociraptor too, had wings and may even have been capable of flight.

In conclusion, the true-life velociraptor is a far cry away from the velociraptors I saw watching Jurassic Park as a kid. Fortunately, as an illustrator, I can unabashedly draw velociraptors however I like. For now, I’ll continue to draw them in the classic way, because drawing scary turkeys simply isn’t as exciting.
